Novolex traces its roots to Hilex Poly Co. LLC, a South Carolina-based plastic bag manufacturer that grew through acquisitions, including the July 2014 purchase of Duro Bag Manufacturing — founded in 1953 in Covington, Kentucky by S. David Shor and, at the time, the world's largest paper bag manufacturer. The Carlyle Group acquired majority ownership of Novolex in November 2016, and Apollo Global Management became majority owner in February 2022 in a deal valued at roughly $6 billion. Today Novolex is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina and Lake Forest, Illinois, operating more than 100 manufacturing locations and 7 regional distribution centers across North America and Europe with over 20,000 employees. The company manufactures food, beverage, and specialty packaging spanning roughly 120 product categories, 39,000 SKUs, and 250 brands for foodservice, restaurant carryout/delivery, food processing, grocery/retail, and industrial customers — including the plastic T-shirt and thank-you retail bags AFS Marketplace carries. In April 2025, Novolex completed its $6.7 billion acquisition of Pactiv Evergreen, folding that company's foam, molded-fiber, and clear-plastic foodservice packaging lines into its portfolio. Novolex describes its purpose as "Packaging for a Better Future," organized around choice, innovation, and sustainability.
