Handgards traces back to 1959, when the company began as Plasticsmith before reorganizing and taking the Handgards name in 1966 under T. Hamil Reidy. The company arrived in El Paso, Texas in 1973, where it built out substantial manufacturing operations that remain its headquarters today at 901 Hawkins Blvd., employing nearly 300 people at that facility alone. In February 2022, Handgards acquired Fineline Settings, a Middletown, New York-based maker of premium disposable plastic tableware, combining the two companies' complementary foodservice packaging lines.
