Handgards traces back to 1959, when the company began as Plasticsmith before reorganizing and taking the Handgards name in 1966 under T. Hamil Reidy. The company arrived in El Paso, Texas in 1973, where it built out substantial manufacturing operations that remain its headquarters today at 901 Hawkins Blvd., employing nearly 300 people at that facility alone. Handgards manufactures a broad range of foodservice disposables, including nitrile, latex, vinyl, and synthetic/hybrid disposable gloves, poly food storage and reclosable bags (Tuffgards), protective apparel such as aprons, hairnets, and bibs (NeatGards, Valugards), pan liners (PanGards), and bamboo, wood, and plastic picks and skewers - the range of glove, bag, apron, and pick products AFS Marketplace carries from the brand. Wind Point Partners acquired Handgards in October 2020 with plans to expand manufacturing and grow the company's product portfolio through further acquisitions. In February 2022, Handgards acquired Fineline Settings, a Middletown, New York-based maker of premium disposable plastic tableware, combining the two companies' complementary foodservice packaging lines.
