Placon was founded in 1966 by Tom Mohs in Madison, Wisconsin, and is headquartered today in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. The company specializes in plastic packaging via thermoforming and injection molding, serving the food, retail, and medical markets across four manufacturing locations and more than 500 employees. Placon invented and patented the BlisterBox clamshell retail package in 1980, and began producing recycled PET packaging in 1992 — work recognized with the Wisconsin Governor's Award for Waste Reduction and Recycling in 1993. Between 2011 and 2021 the company acquired four additional packaging businesses and built its EcoStar® recycling facility, which now processes more than one billion PET bottles and thermoforms annually.
