Southern Champion Tray was founded in 1927 in Chattanooga, Tennessee by Milt Zeiser, who began manufacturing paperboard food trays in the community. The company has stayed family-controlled for three generations: Milt's son Chuck joined full-time in 1958, his sons John and Bruce rose to leadership in the early 1980s and took formal control by the 1990s, and Brian Hunt recently became the company's first non-family President. Southern Champion Tray is headquartered at 220 Compress Street in Chattanooga and now employs close to 1,000 people, shipping to customers in all 50 U.S. states plus Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, and roughly 20 other countries. The company manufactures paperboard packaging for the bakery, foodservice, and retail markets, with a catalog spanning more than 500 stock items - including the non-window bakery boxes and corrugated cake circles AFS Marketplace carries from the brand - alongside custom retail and corrugated packaging sold under brands such as ChampWare(R) and ChampPak(R). Manufacturing is spread across a corrugated plant in Fairfield, Ohio, a custom retail packaging division in Mansfield, Texas, and several Chattanooga-area sites, including a new plant built in the Centre South Riverport Industrial Complex that added more than 120 jobs. In 2022, Southern Champion Tray acquired Evergreen Packaging, broadening its bakery and foodservice packaging line.
